Nancy Ford Cones Gallery
In 2004 GLHSM opened the Nancy Ford Cones Gallery. A grant from the
Fine Arts Fund enabled the museum to create an appropriate environment
for the public display and preservation of Cones' work.
Nancy Ford Cones (1869-1962), Loveland resident and internationally
known photographer, born in Milan, Ohio, received more than fifty-four
awards in national photographic competition from 1902 through 1916.
A pictorial photographer, Cones documented images of Ohio country life.
Using friends and relatives as models, she photographed work in farm
fields as well as in farm homes, creating images that projected a romantic
aura.
Cones was an active member of the Cincinnati Photographic Club and became
well known during these years for her portraits of prominent Cincinnati
residents, including President William Howard Taft and artist Henry
Farny. She also worked with Bausch and Lomb and Ansco Corporation and
received lucrative advertising contracts with Eastman Kodak. All three
manufacturers purchased, used and exhibited her work and helped to establish
her as one of a very few photographers, especially women, who were able
to make an income in this field. Her photographs were deemed valuable
not only for the commercial marketability, but also for their artistic
merit.
A limited number of her prints from the GLHSM collection will be on display on a rotating basis.
